A Wealth of Knowledge | A Passion for Nature
Jeff is a native Minnesotan and a natural tinkerer and techie. Jeff joined the Dojo Five team in July 2019 and loves the variety of projects and clients – as well as the opportunity to work for a growing business and a collaborative team.
Jeff grew up south of Minneapolis on a small hobby farm and went to high school in New Prague, Minnesota. He then relocated to North Dakota to study at North Dakota State University (NDSU). His original major was electrical engineering, but after taking several IT-related courses, he decided to focus his efforts on computer sciences. His initial interest in embedded systems and technologies was fostered during his time at NDSU – although, he still loves the physical engineering side of things as much as software engineering.
His first career opportunity was with a firm in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he worked on embedded systems for CNC mills and lathes as well as robotic arms that were used for education and training. After several years in this role, he moved back to the Twin Cities metro area and married his wife, Janet. After working at some motion control companies he began working for Logic Product Development in 2002, where he spent over 12 years working on a diverse portfolio of projects. Jeff has extensive experience in medical devices, consumer electronics, imaging, and a variety of other industries providing embedded development and engineering services.
Jeff's initial interest in embedded systems and technologies was fostered during his time at NDSU – although, he still loves the physical engineering side of things as much as software engineering.
His favorite project was working on a nCPAP device that helped infants and young children with breathing troubles survive and become healthy. The impact of the device is what he is most fond of – helping other people and impacting lives in a practical manner. His dream project or job is also based around this theme – if money were no object, his dream would be to select a couple of open source projects and contribute back to the community.
In his free time, Jeff enjoys spending time with his family and friends traveling and doing outdoor activities, such as camping, kayaking (both river and lake), hiking and nature photography. He has a strong connection with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota. Along with the outdoors, Jeff has a woodworking shop in his basement, where he creates cabinets, home accessories and home improvement projects. He also enjoys reading – especially science fiction, fantasy and horror. A few of his favorite authors are Jim Butcher, Brandon Sanderson, Kim Harrison, Kevin Hearne, Martha Wells, Charles Stross, John Scalzi, Neil Gaiman and Dennis E Taylor.
His favorite things about working at Dojo Five:
- The wide variety of projects that allow him to learn and utilize his skills to their full potential
- The leadership of the organization and the fact that the management is very transparent and inclusive
- That he has time to spend with his family and enjoy his wide variety of hobbies and interests
- He likes the fact that the environment is open and collaborative and there is seamless communication between different team members and support (if needed) to work through challenges related to an embedded project
Thank you for your hard work, Jeff – your depth and breadth of experience help us flourish as we continue to grow as a company! We look forward to having your experience help lead the way on embedded projects and help educate our team with your wealth of knowledge!
